How does Dermal Fillers work
The filler is injected beneath the skin at the depth needed to lift, contour or smooth the target area, then gently shaped by the practitioner. The gel adds volume immediately and draws in water to maintain plumpness, so results are visible straight away and continue to settle over one to two weeks as any initial swelling resolves.
Hyaluronic acid is a water-loving molecule already present throughout the skin. When placed as a filler it works in several ways:
- Volume restoration — physically fills and lifts the area where it is placed
- Water binding — attracts and holds moisture, adding hydration and plumpness
- Tissue support — provides scaffolding that supports the overlying skin
- Collagen stimulation — the gel can encourage some new collagen around it over time

Patient Journey
What to expect

Consultation
Every dermal filler treatment begins with a consultation. Your practitioner assesses your facial proportions and areas of volume loss, discusses your goals and what will look balanced, reviews your medical history and explains the product, amount and cost before agreeing a plan.

Preparation
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before treatment to reduce bruising
- Pause non-essential blood-thinning supplements such as fish oil and vitamin E for a few days where safe
- Avoid booking within two weeks of a major event to allow for settling
- Arrive with clean skin, free of make-up on the treatment area
- Tell your practitioner about any history of cold sores if lips are being treated

Treatment
After cleansing the skin, numbing cream may be applied, and many fillers also contain a local anaesthetic for comfort. The filler is then injected into the target area using a fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula, and the practitioner moulds it into shape as they go. You may feel mild pressure during placement. Treatment usually takes thirty to forty-five minutes depending on the area, and results are visible immediately. An aftercare guide is provided before you leave.
