How does Botox Anti-Wrinkle Injections work
Once injected, the toxin binds to the nerve endings in the targeted muscle and blocks the signal that causes it to contract. Over the following three to five days the muscle begins to relax, and the skin above it stops folding with each expression. As movement reduces, lines that were etched by years of frowning or raising the brows appear visibly softened, with the full effect settling by around two weeks.
Botulinum toxin works at the junction where nerves meet muscle fibres. By interrupting the chemical signal that tells the muscle to contract, it produces several effects:
- Neuromuscular blockade — blocks the release of acetylcholine, the messenger that triggers muscle contraction
- Muscle relaxation — the treated muscle gradually softens and stops creasing the overlying skin
- Line prevention — reducing repeated folding gives existing lines time to settle and helps slow new ones forming
- Targeted precision — only the injected muscles are affected, so surrounding expression is preserved

Patient Journey
What to expect

Consultation
Every Botox treatment begins with a consultation. Your practitioner assesses your facial anatomy at rest and in movement, reviews your medical history and any medications, discusses the look you want to achieve and explains what is realistic. Together you agree which areas to treat and the dose before anything is injected.

Preparation
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment, as it can increase bruising
- Stop non-essential blood-thinning supplements such as fish oil, vitamin E and high-dose ibuprofen for a few days where safe to do so
- Do not book Botox immediately before a major event — allow two weeks for it to settle
- Arrive with clean skin and no heavy make-up on the areas to be treated
- Let your practitioner know if you have an important occasion coming up so timing can be planned

Treatment
Your practitioner will first mark the injection points while you make a few facial expressions, so the muscles can be mapped accurately. The skin is cleansed and, using a very fine needle, small amounts of the product are injected into each point. Most people describe only a brief pinch or stinging sensation with each injection, and no anaesthetic is usually needed. The treatment itself typically takes ten to twenty minutes. You can return to most normal activities straight away, following the aftercare advice you are given.
